Dealing with Common Discomforts During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, Nausea, Vomiting, Indigestion, Constipation, and swelling of the legs are minor but most concerning problems in pregnant women. These are considered normal in pregnant women but not during all stages of pregnancy. Let us get more knowledgeable.

For some of them, these signs stay for five months of their pregnancy, but for others, they need to bear these discomforts for the whole nine months. These are considered normal during pregnancy, But according to studies, women having these signs have fewer chances of abortions and the child’s death in the womb than pregnant women with no such signs.

However, pregnancy symptoms differ from pregnancy to pregnancy and woman to woman. During the first few weeks itself, hormone changes take place rapidly. Especially during the first trimester, estrogen levels increase, which is why vomiting and nausea rise highly.

For some of them, bleeding can be one of the early symptoms of pregnancy, called implantation bleeding. About two weeks after conception, the embryo implants itself into the uterus. Keep a pad as you can always watch how much and what type of bleeding occurs as some infection in the pelvic cavity or urinary tract may cause bleeding.


Due to an increase in work and stress, this vomiting may increase. So better take rest frequently during the first trimester. If more liquids are taken at once, you feel like getting vomiting, take liquids in small quantities but frequently. Opt for foods less in fat and high in carbohydrates. Do not take too hot and too cold foods. Vomiting due to smell can be avoided by not eating very hot foods.

After getting out of bed, have biscuits to avoid nausea. If no result is found, consult your gynecologist for medicines if nausea and vomiting are very high.

Lower backaches and headaches may be a symptom that occurs early in pregnancy; however, it is normal to experience backache and headaches throughout pregnancy. This happens due to a sudden rise in hormone levels. But if severe, please consult your gynecologist.

If nausea and vomiting are followed by urine in a dark color, or you are not passing urine for eight hours, experiencing pain in the pelvic area, fever, weakness, giddiness, blood while vomiting, continuous vomiting, not taking any foods in 24 hours, do not neglect and consult your doctor immediately.

Another sign of pregnancy is tender or swollen breasts, which you may experience as early as 2-3 weeks after conception. You may notice changes in your breasts; they may be tender to the touch, sore, or swollen. Also, the skin around your nipples, which is called the areola, may get darker.

Take frequent urine and blood tests to evaluate sugar levels in your body and blood, keep your sugar levels intact, and avoid Congestional Diabetes.


Heartburn, foods coming back in the neck area, nausea, and vomiting are all signals for Indigestion. Every pregnant woman gets difficulty in her stomach in one term of pregnancy or the other. As the baby grows in the womb, this situation keeps on increasing. Changes in hormone levels, stress on the stomach, acids in the stomach when it reaches the digestive system give rise to this situation.

Taking high nutritious foods would solve half of your problem. When the stomach is packed with food, this indigestion problem increases. Taking less and frequent meals would solve indigestion problems. Foods should be rich in Carbohydrates, fruits, fresh vegetables, multi-grains, and milk products should be included. Drinking coffee, eating fat-rich foods should be reduced to a large extent. Having once in a while is not a problem!

Take food 3 hours before sleeping. Keep your head in a little higher position, and wear bump-friendly cotton maternity nighties to sleep comfortably at night. If Indigestion continues even after following certain instructions, then consult your doctor for proper medication.

Women in the first trimester feel like having specific foods like pickles, ice creams, sour foods, but be careful too many oily and spicy foods would affect your health. These food cravings are seen throughout nine months.


During pregnancy, hormones affect your muscles and nuclear system to a large extent. The digestive system takes more water consumption than food. Also due to usage of iron tablets and not doing any exercise leads to constipation.

Increase intake of fluids than solids. Have fresh fruits, vegetables. have foods rich in fiber. Reduce intake of tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks.

Being active, doing pregnancy-specific exercises, brisk walking, and yoga for pregnant women reduce the chances of constipation. But consult your doctor before doing any exercise or yoga.

#Pain in Your Feet and Swelling

During pregnancy, putting on weight is normal. The weight you put on falls on your feet and legs, due to which pain is felt. As months increase in your pregnancy, the uterus keeps on getting bigger and sagging. All that weight falls on legs, ligaments, and nerves, which reduces blood circulation. The water content in the body reaches the feet, making them swell, which is called Edema.

Tips for Pregnant Women

Here are some additional tips to help pregnant women combat common pregnancy discomforts:

  • Select a comfortable pair of sandals for your feet so that your feet can breathe in the fresh air. Put on your sandals during the morning time, as the swelling is more during the early morning. While sleeping, keep your feet on a high level compared to your body.
  • Avoid wearing your regular clothes that have now become tight and uncomfortable. Instead, wear lightweight and stretchable maternity clothes to keep your bump in utmost comfort all the time.
  • If sitting is required or you need to work while sitting, keep your feet on a stool.
  • Do not keep your legs crossed. Feel relaxed and sit in a relaxed position keeping your legs apart. Spread your legs for most of the time.
  • Do not sit continuously or stand continuously. Take a break while sitting and take a short walk as it increases your blood circulation in the legs. While sitting, rotate your legs once in a while. Include little and delicate exercises in your fitness.
  • Brisk walking is the best exercise during pregnancy. Drink plenty of water for hydration of your body, and eat foods having less salt. If your legs are swollen along with your hands and face, consult your doctor immediately as it might be a sign of high blood pressure.
